용인에 작업장을 마련하고 온 지도 18년이나 되었다. 작업장 뒤에 계곡과 산이 있어 자연을 쉽게 접할 수 있는 곳이다. 이곳도 개발로 인해 처음 왔을 때에 비하면 많이 달려졌다. 그래서 자연에 대한 애착이 더 커졌다. 봄이 되면 낮에는 잠자리, 나비, 꿀벌등이 나의 정원을 찾는다. 꽃에 따라 다양한 곤충들이 모여든다. 요즘은 밀잠자리와 고추잠자리를 보기가 한층 어려워졌다. 개발로 인해 잠자리뿐 아니라 나비도 벌의 수도 한층 줄었다. 밤이 되면 개구리가 소리로 더욱 크게 들린다. 개구리의 소리는 바람소리와 함께 자연의 소리로 들린다. 연못의 수면에 빗방울이 떨어지면 물가에서 물을 바라보는 재미가 쏠쏠하다. 개구리가 소리로 비에 민감하게 반응하는 것이 보인다. 반딧불이, 잠자리, 나비, 꿀벌, 개구리등은 자연의 변화에 매우 민감핟. 사람들은 왜 자연을 훼손하는 걸까? 사람들은 자연에 돼 무감각한 걸까?

내가 크롬이 들어간 강철 합금인 스테인리스 스틸을 재료로 선택한 것은 염산, 황산등에 의한 부식에도 견디고 녹이 생기지 않아 재료의 질이 그대로 보존되기 때문이다. 스테인리스 스틸은 표면이 매끄러워서 차갑고 깊이를 드러내지 않지만, 대신에 거울처럼 외부세계를 반사하므로 외부세계를 끌어들이는 특성이 있다. 관람자는 자신의 모습이 작품에 투영된 것을 바라볼 수 있다. 작품이 관람자를 끌어들이는 것이다.

스테인리스 스틸로 반딧불이, 잠잘, 나비, 꿀벌등을 작업해온 지 오래되었다. 자연에서 멀리 떨어져 사는 도시의 사람들에게 그들에게 익숙한 최첨단 물질로 자연의 생물을 보여주고 싶었다. 누구에게나 아름다운 기억으로 남아있는 반딧불이, 잠자리, 나비, 꿀벌등 사라져 가는 소중한 자연에 대한 아쉬움을 얘기하고 싶었다. 스테인리스 스틸은 나의 감성을 자극하여 신비로운 곤충의 형상과 영원성을 표현하기에 만족스러운 재료였다.

피곤에 지친 몸으로 용인의 작업장으로 돌아오면 청정한 기운을 공급해주는 자연이 나를 기다리고 있다. 물소리가 있고, 개구리소리가 있으며, 정원에 나가면 잠자리, 나비, 꿀벌등이 나를 기다리고 있는 것 같아 반갑다. 이른 아침에 계속을 따라 산에 오를 때면 눈에 띄는 모든 것들과 대화하면서 자연의 아름다움에 다시금 감탄한다.

나의 작품은 자연에 대한 표현이다. 멀어져 가는 생물을 도시고 끌어들이는 작업이다. 관람자를 작품에 투영시켜 생물과 한데 어우러지게 하는 것이 주된 목적이다. 잠자리, 나비, 꿀벌등이 도시에서도 날아다니기를 바란다. 

I have been working in my workshop in Youngin since 1996. It is surrounded by a wooded valley and mountain. The surrounding environment has been changed a lot compared it when I moved in. For that reason my attachment to nature has been grown.

In the springtime a variety of dragonflies, butterflies, bees come to my garden. All kind of insects are gathered according to the kind of flowers. In these days I hardly find some particular dragonflies and butterflies. Because of many forests have been lost to commercial development the amount of them I have been decreased.

In the nighttime I can hear the croaking of frogs ver well. To me the croaking of frogs and wind are the sound of nature. When raindrops fall during a walk I look at a stream. I can enjoy a transitional water and the frogs' response. The frogs are very sensitive to the weather. Why people destroy nature? Why people insensible to nature?

I chose a stainless steel for my works because it endures a corrosion caused by a sulfuric and hydrochloric acids and preserve the original form. As it has a fair surface it gives a freezing feeling. But it brings the outside world and show as it is. A viewer can see himself or herself on the surface. My work reflects both the viewer and the outside world.

I have been made may firefly, dragonflies butterflies, bees, etc. from a stainless steel. I wanted to show the city dwellers the living things in nature made of the material familiar to them. I wanted to show the natural world in the form of a stainless steel. To me it is the very thing to convey them.

I come to my workshop after an urban activities and realize that nature awaits for me. The sound of a stream, the croaking of frogs and a variety of dragonflies, butterflies, bees make me very happy. I admire very much the beauty of nature during a morning walk.

My work are an expression of mixed feelings I had from nature. The main purpose is bringing the living things in nature to an urban, I want to city dwellers in harmony with the living things in the form of stainless steel. I wish my dragonflies, butterflies, bees, etc. are flying around them.
