신한철
신한철은 구(sphere)를 기초로 하여 증식과 분열내지는 확산하는 형태를 지속적으로 보여주고 있는 작가이다. 평면회화에서 가장 순수하고 추상적인 형태가 절대주의자 말레비치가 생각했던 흰색 사각형이라면 신한철의 조각에서 가장 추상적이며 생성과 등가물로서의 형태는 바로 구다. 때때로 이 구는 어떤 징후도 잠재성도 없는 완전하고 순수한 기하학적 입체로 이해되기도 한다. 그러나 신한철에게 있어 구는 미니멀리스트의 오브제처럼 모든 이미지가 제거되어 더 이상 환원할 수 없는 정화된 형(形)의 궁극적 종착지가 아니라 무엇으로도 변태(metamorphosis)할 수 있는 생명의 시원이자 형(形)의 출발점이다. 그것은 정지되어 있는 것이 아니라 일순간 행동의 이미지를 잠시 유보하고 있는 진행형임을 암시한다. 결국 신한철의 작품에서 구와 그 연속들은 미니멀리즘의 동어반복(tautologia)적인 것이 아닌 생명의 구체적 표출인 생성과 호흡의 결과물이다. 그것들을 통해서 우리는 생명의 형태를 볼 수 있으며 힘, 운동, 성장, 삶의 메시지가 신체로 육화되었음을 느낀다.

Shin, Han-chul is an artist dealing with spheres in various manners. If the white square of Malevich was an absolute form in painting, it is a sphere for Shin, Han-chul that means the most pure and original form of work now in sculpture. Sometimes, the sphere is understood as a most abstract and perfect physical form in everlasting stillness. However, for Shin, Han-chul, it is not the ultimate goal of form like the minimalists' object but the origin and seed of life and form towards the endless plastic metamorphosis. It is suggesting a conditional repose to progress in stillness of moment. Therefore, the sphere one and all in his work is a result of repiration to revive a life denying the tautological manner of minimalism. We can see through them the force, movement, developing and messaging of life to feel in the carnal flesh. You
